Rep. Loon votes for same-sex marriage bill

Rep. Jenifer Loon of Eden Prairie was one of four Republicans in the Minnesota House of Representatives to vote for a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage, if approved by the Senate.

The measure passed 75-59 today. Local DFL Reps. Yvonne Selcer of Minnetonka, 48A, and Paul Rosenthal of Edina, 49B, voted for the measure as well.

Rep. Loon released the following statement regarding her vote “on legislation to provide civil marriage equality for same-sex couples:”

“I voted in favor of civil marriage equality for all Minnesotans. Two years ago, nearly to this date, I voted to give Minnesotans a chance to weigh in on this issue. The conversation began and I have learned that my constituents support extending the same rights and benefits afforded opposite-sex couples to same-sex couples in civil marriage,” Rep. Loon said in the statement. “My personal and religious belief is that marriage is between one man and one woman, but my duty as a legislator is to honor the separation between church and state. I voted today in favor of an amendment to provide the strongest protections for religious liberties of any state in the nation that has considered this issue.”

The Senate is expected to take up the matter on Monday.
